The Flat White Diaries: Mustafa’s Flat White
Yes! Admittedly, it’s been a while since we posted anything. Our bad. But it’s not because there has been nothing going on. Let’s get into a juicy update!
Mustafa’s Flat White
Last weekend we spent Sunday afternoon catching up with our good mate Mustafa.
We met at a cool place in hipster-heaven Telliskivi called F-hoone (pronounced hoo-neh – don’t forget to pronounce every vowel!). Seriously, this place is one of the coolest around, and despite it’s hipster level being more than 9000, there is nothing pretentious about it. Part restaurant, part cafe, part bar, and wholly awesome. If you come and visit us, we’ll be taking you here.
Anyway, I digress. No flat white appeared on the menu, so I ordered a beer. Mustafa, on the other hand, was brazen enough to ask if they’d do a flat white, and boom! Flat white was on its way.
After explaining to Mustafa about the existence of the blog, he insisted I sample his flat white as a means of contributing to the betterment of coffee standards across the globe.
Although I had just had beer, I accepted. So here goes.
As nature intended.
Two things stood out for me with this FW. First was that based on the time of day – late afternoon – the blend that they used was very strong. I think it isn’t as common to switch blends later in the day to a smoother, lighter one. The second was the froth; it was way too thick; it was essentially like a latte.
Could’ve been warmer, though I suspect it sat at the counter for too long.
Today is the winter solstice
The shortest day of the year! Now, we’re reasonably far north, but not so far that there is no daylight. But for someone who hasn’t lived in this kind of extreme before, this is how today felt:
Just to give you an idea of what it’s like, in case you’re also a far north or far south virgin like me, this photo has the correct exposure to show you exactly how it looks to the eye. It was taken at 15:40.
Now you can understand why vitamin D the most prominent supplements on display in every pharmacy! 😀
Of course, the flip side to this is that summer will be amazing, with light well into the night – and for some bizarre reason, Estonia chooses to do daylight savings time, which prolongs things even more!
It’s almost Christmas, and for the first time for both of us, it’ll be white! There is even snow forecast on the 25th. We’re going to have dinner st the christmas market tomorrow night, and also have lots of glöggi, which is the Scandinavian take on gluhwein/mulled wine. Yum!
BUT – dear reader – don’t worry. We’re currently working on a gift for all of you. For reals!
Watch this space, and you’ll get an email in the next few days 😉
